PROJECT SUMMARY:

The Dallas Dinner Table provides an opportunity to hear and to share diverse perspectives about the impact of race on the daily lives of Dallas residents. The dinners are designed to:

  • Encourage communication about race relations and the impact of ethnicity on relationships
  • Educate participants about perspectives held by others related to race relations
  • Empower citizens to develop relationships with people from a variety of racial/ethnic groups.

Dallas Dinner Table 2003 will be held on the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday—Monday evening, January 20, 2003 at 6:00pm. The dinners will be held in private homes or restaurants with each dinner attended by multi-racial participants. Participants will be discouraged from focusing on institutional, political or community-level "solutions." Rather, the dinners encourage cross-cultural communication and focus on personal action, personal growth, and personal advantages from building cross-racial relationships.

PROGRAM ELEMENTS:

  • Host Responsibilities: Hosts volunteer to provide the location and food for 8-10 people on the evening of January 20th. They may invite up to 3 people of their choosing in addition to those assigned-but must provide registration forms for their guests by January 3, 2003. They will distribute gifts provided by LDAA to the dinner guests.
  • Facilitator Responsibilities: Facilitators will attend a two-hour orientation prior to the event. At the dinners they will introduce the icebreaker, lead a guided discussion, and provide qualitative feedback.
  • Participants Responsibilities: Participants are assigned a dinner table. The evening includes an icebreaker, dinner, and discussions centered on questions that the participants select and provide a response. The questions focus on values, beliefs, fears, needs and goals. Each participant will have several minutes to share thoughts and reactions, with limited inquiry from other participants.

Facilitators lend structure to the program and utilize established techniques designed to minimize debate and maximize understanding among people representing different backgrounds and cultures. The program design allows for 90 minutes of discussion with a target completion time of 9:30 p.m.

FOLLOW-UP:

Participants, hosts and facilitators will all be asked to complete feedback forms prior to leaving the dinner. There will also be a gathering planned where the people who participated can "debrief" the experience. A full program report will be published promoting the broader applications of the program for other communities.
